Poverty in South Africa

Poverty in South Africa

Eventhough South Africa is the main economy of Africa - almost a 25% of total GDP - it is from another point of view one of the worst economies in the world due to the poverty of most of the South African people.

Now you might be wondering why is it's economy that bad if they have been able to produce a lot, and there are many answers to explain this.
  1. As we learned in classes, this area was enslaved by European people, nowadays more than the 80% of the arable land is owned by their descents instead of the native people.
The misuse of land has brought great troubles for native people, most of them are homeless or live in places they don't own.
  2. A big problem nowadays in the poorest areas is the health, particularly diseases spreaded through the water, these diseases affect specially children because their body ain't strong enough to fight the disease, this problem's main cause is the lack of drinkable water due to the combination of sewer water and drinking water.
  3. Another issue is the misusage of money granted by other nations in order to help them, mostly used by corrupt governments to make weapons -particularly nuclear ones- instead of using it to fix some of the problems that are affecting negatively the people.

Perhaps the biggest problem at the moment in South Africa is the education and infraestructure, as an effect           of the problems exposed above we find these "sub-problem" which is able to succesfully mantain the poverty for native people, as long as there isn't a correct use of the money there will never be a proper condition for children to grow up, most of them die before they are adults, and when they grow up they turn into a cheap manpower instead of a chance of change.
There is no chance for education for kids, therefore there is no chance to improve as long as corrupt governments and unfair money distribution exist.

  1. Also one of the problems, mainly in southafrica, is gold mining, and this happens: The African labor is very cheap, labor movements are suppressed and environmental standards are not respected. For this the African american people live in poverty. Discharges of contaminated water, cyanide poisoning, poorly enforced safety standards, massive displacement of local populations.
